Can’t Be Like Me – From The Upcoming Promised Land EP Out July 15th via Soundcloud, Spotify and other platforms.
Apiwe Bubu’s new five-song EP Promised Land, mixes hip hop, trap, and Afrowave with South African sounds and vocal styles. These infectious tracks, including lead single “Can’t Be Like Me,” transport listeners out of the mundane with addictive melodies and relentless rhythms that establish an entirely new global African sound.
Born in Mthatha in South Africa’s Eastern Cape and raised in Johannesburg, Bubu trained under pianist Andile Yenana before studying music production/engineering and contemporary music writing/composition at Berklee. Now based in Los Angeles, he runs Global Sound Studio LA, specializing in music production, mix engineering, and vocal recording. Bubu has collaborated with clients such as Chief Keef (Glo Gang), Adam Friedman, Bridgit Mendler, and Bumi Dup’e, among others.
As a DJ and composer/producer, he connects the best of both Western and African worlds, developing a unique sound that is globally inflected but unmistakably South African. Also, as one half of DJ duo Amagintsa, Apiwe Bubu and Swazi Sunshine host the biweekly dance party Move Your Body, which can be streamed via Twitch.tv/amagintsa.
